Smart Gates at Dubai International Airport (Terminal 3) are state-of-the-art, contactless passport control systems. Who Can Use the Smart Gates?
- UAE citizens and GCC nationals.
- UAE residents who are registered with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA).
- Visitors eligible for visa on arrival who hold biometric passports (with an electronic chip).
Most travelers who have recently entered Dubai International Airport are already registered automatically at the immigration counters, which means they are likely eligible to use Smart Gates on their next trip.
Who Should Not Use the Smart Gates?
- Passengers of determination (people of determination/special needs) who require personal assistance.
- Travelers with large strollers.
- Families traveling with young children.
- Children under 15 years old or anyone shorter than 1.2 meters.
These passengers are advised to use the manned counters for a smoother process.
How to Use the Smart Gates?
- Approach the Smart Gate and wait for the green light.
- Look directly at the camera for facial recognition.
- You usually don’t need to scan your passport or boarding pass, but keep them ready in case requested.
- Remove anything covering your face—such as masks, sunglasses, or hats—for accurate identification.
In just a few seconds, the gate will open and you’re cleared to proceed.
